He smiled at his reflection in the mirror. That was much better. At least he knew Jess would like it better.
Nodding to himself, he left the bathroom and headed for work.
His men gave him a strange glance, but didn’t say anything. They obeyed his orders as usual, but still Becker was sure they were talking about him behind his back. Why on earth were they so interested in his looks?
Maybe it was because they’d heard the comment as well as he had. Jess surely hadn’t known she was using an open channel when she’d asked Abby about Becker’s new look and then told her she didn’t like it.
“It makes him look so… old,” she’d said. “It doesn’t suit him at all.”
“Why don’t you just tell him you don’t like it?” Abby had asked.
“I really don’t think that’s my business…” Jess had mumbled.
“So you don’t like the tickling while kissing?” Abby had teased with a giggle.
“I… we… It’s not like… I have to go,” Jess had stuttered before ending the call.
Becker had spent several hours examining himself in the mirror after having overheard that talk. He’d been glad he’d overheard it – he’d been glad he’d found out that Jess didn’t like the beard. Because it mattered to him what she thought – more than he would ever admit. So he’d finally made the only right decision.
Smiling, he walked into the ADD after the training session with his men. He couldn’t wait for her reaction.
As usual, Jess was sitting in front of the computer screens at the ADD waiting for any signs of an anomaly or a creature incursion. Her fingers elegantly flew across the keyboards while she checked news or ran background searches or whatever else there was in her job description.
Abby’s eyes widened a little when she spotted Becker, before she grinned knowingly and withdrew into the main corridor.
“Um, Jess?” Becker started. “There’s… something I wanted to show you and, well, ask for your opinion.”
Her fingers froze in the middle of the movement. He wanted her opinion on something? Why on earth would he ask her of all people? Usually he asked Connor, or Abby, or even Lester… Well, maybe it was something computer related.
Jess turned around, and froze once more, her eyes widening at the sight of him freshly shaved. Then a huge grin spread across her face. He’d taken off the beard.
Becker smiled at her reaction. “So, what do you say?” he asked.
“Much better,” Jess told him with an approving nod. “You look a lot younger without the beard, and a lot…”
He frowned when she refused to finish the sentence. “A lot what?” he demanded to know.
Blushing a little, Jess looked down, shuffling her foot coyly. “Well, a lot sexier,” she mumbled.
Becker grinned. She thought he was sexy – and sexier without the beard. “Good,” he said, walking up to her and leaning in to whisper into her ear. “That was what I wanted to hear.”
“Well, um, I’m… glad that I could help,” she stuttered, her heart beating like mad. “And glad you got rid of that beard,” she added in a whisper.
Smiling, he moved away, letting his cheek brush hers ever so slightly causing her to shiver. Yeah, it had definitely been a good idea to shave the beard off.
