“Damn it,” Becker grumbled, and looked up from his motorcycle to give Jess an apologetic look. “I’m sorry about this.”

Jess smiled at him. “Did you manipulate the motorcycle?”

Frowning, Becker shook his head no.

“Then it’s not your fault,” she told him. “Maybe we should call someone? Or you’ll have to wheel the bike home.”

“That’s two miles,” he said, frowning at her. “Do you think you can walk such a distance in these shoes?”

Looking at her pumps, Jess sighed. He had a point there.

“I’ll call Abby, maybe she or Connor can pick us up,” he offered.

Jess opened her mouth to ask why he didn’t call Matt, but then just shook her head. She would never understand why they still – even after everything they’ve been through together – behaved like kids trying to outdo the other.

“Damn, she’s not answering,” Becker grumbled, dialling Connor’s number. He wasn’t answering his phone, either.

“Seems like we’re stuck here, then,” Jess commented, giving him another smile. Looking around, she realised things could be much worse. Sure, Becker’s motorcycle had died in a pretty secluded part of town – but it was also a pretty nice part.

They were standing under a bridge across the river Thames, and the night was mild and starry. The sight was beautiful, and the company was even better. Jess absolutely had no intention of complaining.

“I’ll just text them,” Becker said. “Maybe they’ll read it and pick us up.”

She nodded in agreement. Somehow she hoped they wouldn’t pick them up – at least not in the all too near future. Not that there was any chance this night would change anything between her and Becker. But Jess couldn’t stop hoping that someday he would wake up and realise he had feelings for her, too.

Yeah, Jessica, keep dreaming!

“Are you okay?” Becker asked, stepping next to her. “I mean, are you cold or something?”

“No, I’m fine,” Jess assured him.

That little exchange was followed by a long silence, until Jess finally snorted.

“What?” Becker asked.

“Oh, nothing,” she replied. “Except for the fact that we obviously can’t even talk to each other unless we’re at work.”

“That’s not true,” he objected. “I mean… we… I… We can talk about…”

“Work?” Jess offered.

“No, I… uh… actually I wanted to say…” he stuttered. Damn it, why couldn’t he get a single coherent sentence out of his mouth anymore?!

Maybe it was the fact that she was so close to him. Or maybe it was the fact that he could smell her perfume, the sweet intoxicating scent of strawberries and vanilla. God, he loved the scent of vanilla.

“The weather?” Jess tried, snorting again. “That’s even more depressing than talking about work, you know.”

“When I was a teenager, I used to go fishing with my grandpa every Saturday,” he suddenly said.

Jess turned to stare at him. It was the first time he told her anything about himself, his personal life, his past.

“And every time he gave me some advise, sometimes for life, but mostly about women.” He chuckled slightly.

She opened her mouth to reply something, or ask something. But she was too flabbergasted to talk at all.

“I remember once he told me that you know you’re in love with a woman when you’re all tongue tied around her and don’t seem to know what to say anymore,” he said, and then bit his lip. Great, just great. What a way to get in hot water!

There were two possibilities. Laughing and pretending it was a joke – and probably hurt Jess. Or go with it and at worst letting Jess laugh at him.

She stared at him in shock. What had he just said?! Her heart started pounding like mad.

“So, uh… I guess it’s not the worst sign that we don’t know what to say around each other,” he mumbled, looking down like a coy teenager.

Come on, Becker, you’re good at this!

“Don’t you think?” he added, when Jess still refused to say something.

She opened her mouth, closed it again, and finally managed, “I don’t know… Maybe it just means we don’t have anything to tell…” She looked at him, not able to keep the hope out of her eyes.

Smiling, Becker put a strand of hair behind her ear. “I never experienced you not being able to come up with anything to tell.”

She chuckled. Yeah, he probably had a point there.

Becker took her hand and gently placed it on his chest, so that Jess could feel his racing heart. “Maybe being tongue tied doesn’t prove anything,” he whispered. “But I’m pretty sure my heart wanting to jump out of my chest whenever I’m close to you does mean something.”

Without saying another word, Jess rose to her toes and pressed a chaste kiss against his lips.

He blinked at her, and then smiled.

“Sorry,” she mumbled. “I didn’t want to… jump at you like that. I was just… afraid I might lose the courage if I wait too long.”

“You know, I absolutely don’t mind,” he replied, leaning down to capture her lips with his. She was so close and she smelled better the closer he got. Becker couldn’t help but wonder if she tasted just as good.

Jess’ eyes fluttered shut and she was sure she was about to faint. She could feel his breath against her lips. That was the moment, the moment he would finally kiss her.

“Hey guys, I heard you need a lift,” Connor called from the top of the bridge.

Jess let her head sink against Becker’s chest. Talk about bad timing!

Becker swore silently. “One day, I’m going to kill him.”
