Title: Let me sleep in your arms
Author: little_profiler
Fandom: Primeval
Pairing: Becker/Jess
Rating: T (just in case)
Disclaimer: Neither the show nor the characters belong to me, they belong to ITV1. Nonetheless, I love to borrow them from time to time. The idea of the story as well as the story itself – including all possible pre- or sequels published afterwards – are mine.
Summary: Written for the just_kiss_her vanilla kink meme. The prompt was “Jess may squeak and protest when he does it, but secretly she loves it when Becker picks her up and carries her in his arms.“ by deinonychus_1. Post episode 5.06.
Warnings: not beta-read, spoilers for episodes 5.05 and 5.06
Author notes: Yeah, I know… Why do I even try to resist the prompts? ;) Yep, title taken from the song ‘In your arms’ – but the story honestly doesn’t have anything to do with it.

“I’m fine,” Jess mumbled. “Really, I just… need to finish this and then I’ll go home.”

“You’ll go home now!” Lester commanded, his voice brooking no argument.

But of course, Jess was the only person in the ARC who could disobey his orders without having to fear his rage – and she knew it. “It won’t take more than another hour,” she said, fighting to keep her eyes open.

Lester opened his mouth to argue with her, but gave up. He knew it was pointless. Instead, he called the only person he knew could actually force Jess to go home.

“Jess,” she heard the familiar voice say behind her. “It’s been enough. Go home!”

“I just need to fix this,” she repeated without turning away from the ADD. “Philip left a mess and I…”

“Jess,” Becker softly interrupted her. “It’s been a long day, two long days, actually. Someone else can take care of the ADD and fix it. Go home!”

“No, I have to do this alone,” she stated. “There might be problems in reinstalling the system. Or what if the reboot doesn’t work properly? I don’t even want to think about what happens, if the system crashes again.”

Sighing, Becker walked up to her, whirling her chair around so that she was facing him. He frowned at her in concern when he noticed how pale she really was, and how dark the circles under her eyes were.

“Okay, that’s enough,” he said, pulling her to her feet. “I’m taking you home right now.”

“Becker, I can’t, I…” she objected, trying to break free from his grip.

Fed up with her arguing, he scooped her up in his arms, making her shriek in surprise, and carried her towards the main corridor, away from the ADD.

“Becker, let me down,” she protested, without really putting up a fight. “I can walk on my own. Let me down, now!”

“Since you’re not going where I want you to go, I’m not letting you down,” he said firmly. “I’m taking you home.”

“But I…” she tried again, but gave up arguing. She was just too tired to protest anymore. She felt dizzy, exhausted and ready to pass out and sleep for a day or two.

Becker smiled when she snuggled up against him, only mumbling protests as she drifted off in his arms.

“Take her home,” Lester told him with a nod, telling him the address. “And please, make sure she doesn’t come back before the day after tomorrow.”

Nodding, Becker carried Jess to the car park. He managed to take out his keys and open the door to the passenger’s seat without letting her down or waking her up. Gently setting her down on the seat, he fastened her seatbelt and silently shut the door.

She stirred a little, mumbling something about Philip and the future predators.

“It’s okay, Jess,” he whispered, reaching over to stroke her hair. “You’re safe now.”

She turned her face towards him. “Becker,” she mumbled in her sleep, relaxing against the seat.

He smiled, realising that his presence obviously made her feel safe.

When he pulled into the driveway to her apartment building, he realised that he had to wake her up or search her purse to get inside. Looking at her peaceful face, he unwillingly opted for option two. There was no way he would wake her up.

Fortunately, there wasn’t anything embarrassing to be found in her purse – not that he’d expected anything. He found the keys, unlocked her door, and then went back to his car, gently lifting her up from the passenger’s seat.

“I don’t like being carried around,” she mumbled against his shoulder, but wrapped her arms around his neck nonetheless.

“I know you do,” he whispered, carrying her inside her apartment. Fortunately, the door to her bedroom was open so it was easy to find.

He laid her down on the bed, took of her shoes and pulled the blanket over her.

Jess didn’t stir, even though she was awake and certainly capable of walking into her apartment on her own. But his arms were much too comfortable at the moment to give them up.

Unfortunately – and not surprisingly – he was a perfect gentleman. Not that he would have tried anything if he hadn’t been…

Jess sighed, turned to her side and allowed herself to drift off again.

Becker watched her turn, snuggling up into the sheets. Smiling, he closed the door and decided to search her kitchen for something to eat for her when she woke up.

As he rummaged her fridge, he suddenly heard a scream from the bedroom.

He rushed back inside without even thinking about knocking.

Jess sat upright in her bed, her face covered in sweat and tears.

Becker rushed to her side, sitting down in front of her and gently putting his hands on her shoulders. “Jess,” he softly said. “It’s okay, it was just a dream.”

“They were everywhere,” she whispered between sniffles. “And we just had this one weapon. Lester… He pushed me out of the way and then…”

“It’s okay, Jess,” Becker repeated, gently pulling her into his arms. “Lester’s fine. It’s over.”

“I know,” she whispered into the crook of his neck. “But I… I can’t forget how they… attacked him.”

“I know,” Becker replied in a low voice. “Trust me, I know. But he’s alive. He’ll be fine.”

She pulled away to look at him, her eyes still shining with tears. Then she nodded.

“Are you okay?” Becker asked, his hands unwittingly running up and down her arms.

She nodded, drawing in a shaky breath. “I’m getting there, I guess.”

“Try to sleep,” Becker commanded, but much to his surprise Jess shook her head no.

“I can’t,” she whispered. “I know it’s stupid, but… every time I close my eyes, I see the predators again, and… This must sound like I’m a wimp. Me whining about the predators all the time. I know you see that every day, but I’m just not trained for this.”

“Jess, you fought them on your own after Lester was hurt – despite the fact that you aren’t trained for it,” he told her. “No one’s thinking any less of you because you were afraid. We all were.”

“Really?” she asked, her voice clearly showing that she didn’t believe it. “Well, then you hid it a lot better than I did.”

“I was afraid, Jess,” Becker told her in all seriousness. “I saw what they can do – and I was afraid I would have to see it again.”

She nodded in understanding. She had read his report about Sarah Paige’s death.

“That was why you stayed so long at the ARC, wasn’t it?” he softly asked. “Because you were afraid of the nightmares.”

She nodded again, looking down at her hands.

Becker considered his options. He knew the nightmares. After Sarah’s death he’d had them for a very long time. There was no way Jess would find any sleep tonight. Unless…

He remembered how she’d calmed down in the car in response to his touch. Carefully, Becker crawled under the blanket next to her.

“What are you doing?” Jess asked in utter shock.

He smiled, spreading his arms for her to snuggle up against him. “I’m chasing away the nightmares,” he explained.

Jess stared at him, not believing what he’d just done.

Becker frowned when she didn’t accept his offer. He’d been sure she liked him, had a crush on him really. Maybe he’d been wrong.

“Are you… sure about this?” she whispered.

“Yes, absolutely,” he assured her.

Slowly, Jess placed her head on Becker’s chest, smiling as he wrapped his arms tightly around her. She knew the nightmares wouldn’t get her tonight. Nothing would come to her if Becker was there to protect her.

“Becker?” she mumbled after a while.

“Hm,” he responded, about to drift off himself.

“This wasn’t how I planned on getting you into my bed,” she told him quietly, making him chuckle. She giggled herself, and then sighed. “Too bad you can’t hold me forever.”

Smiling, he kissed the top of her head. “I can try,” he replied.
